Technical Data

RIE 780 Clear

Topcoat for aluminum

1.      Scope

1.1.  RIE 780 Clear will provide additional protection to aluminum, copper, brass and painted surfaces.

2.      Performance Requirements

2.1.  Coating Thickness

The total thickness of the coating shall be less 0.0002” to 0.00075”

2.2.  Corrosion Resistance

2.2.1.     CASS Test.  Coating shall show no pinpoint corrosion nor significant loss of gloss after exposure for 168 hours to ASTM B 368, CASS test.  Gloss is to be measured by any glossmeter capable of reading highly reflective surfaces.  Loss of gloss shall be the average percentage loss of two readings taken in the direction of the machining marks and perpendicular to the machining marks.  An average loss of gloss up to and including 15% is acceptable.

      2.2.2.     Resistance to Chemical Attack

Coating shall show no significant loss of gloss after 500 hours exposure to specific chemicals according to ASTM D 1308, Spot Test. The test shall be conducted on any flat surface.  Loss of gloss shall be the average percentage loss of two readings taken in the direction of the machining marks and perpendicular to the machining marks. An average loss of gloss up to and including 15% is acceptable.

The following chemicals shall be used:

Cold Distilled Water (70oF)

Ethyl Alcohol (50% volume)

Vinegar (3% acetic acid)

Soap Solution (Dawn soap)

Detergent Solution (Commercially available car wash detergent)

30 Weight Oil

Automotive Grease

Diesel Fuel

0.2% Sodium Hydroxide

0.1% Hydrofluoric Acid

2.3.  Adhesion of Coating

2.3.1.     Chip Resistance.  Coating shall show no loss of coating from the tape test and a chip rating no worse than 3A - 4B when tested to ASTM D 3170.  The chip rating is to be evaluated using the Chipping Rating Standards in SAE J 400.

2.3.2.     Mechanical Bending.  Coating on a scribed 1” x 6”, cold-rolled (approximately .060”) flat strip of 6061 aluminum alloy aged to T-6 shall show no loss of adhesion nor surface crazing after completing a 3-point bend test.  The bend is to be 180o around a 1 5/8” mandrel.  The section is to be scribed on both sides according to ASTM D 3359, Method B.

     2.4.  Abrasion Resistance

Coating on a 4” by 4” cold rolled, flat panel of 6061 aluminum alloy, aged to T-6 shall show a material loss of .01 Mg/cycle or less following 1000 cycles of Taber Abrasion according to ASTM D 4060.  A CS 17 wheel and a 1,000 gram load are to be used.

2.5.  Weatherability

Coating on a 4” by 4” cold rolled, flat panel of 6061 aluminum alloy, aged to T-6 shall show no significant loss of gloss after 200 hour exposure to QUV per ASTM D 4587.  Loss of gloss shall be the average percentage loss of two readings taken in the direction of the machining marks and perpendicular to the machining marks. An average loss of gloss up to and including 10% is acceptable.
